When Love Came Calling is written by Preeti Shenoy and published by Srishti Publishers & Distributors. This is a fiction and falls under the romance genre. It is also a story of self-discovery and the tribulations, the youth faces.

Blurb

Puja-19 confused, energetic, fiery. Her philosophy-Life is complicated and only super-achievers have it figured out. Her strict mother sends her to a rural location in Kerala to spend her summer vacation doing volunteer work.

Arush-20 studious, careful, shy. Born and raised in Britain, he is elated when he gets an opportunity to spend 12 weeks in India, a place his parents are from, and once he has never been to.

Sometimes you have to travel far to find your true self.

This book touches many aspects of growing up. Being born in a family of achievers is not an easy thing. It is like a constant battle, where one needs to prove themself. If your family is not on your side, things might turn difficult and at times ugly. The story showcased the above complexities in a beautiful manner. Being a rebel is a way to indicate, the child needs attention and time to connect. Also, the story showcases the maladies of drugs. Not only it destroys the health but also the complete life of the victim. I liked the fact the way Preeti balanced out all the aspects and showcased the inner turmoil of the central character Puja nicely.

But I was disappointed with the climax, it seemed not only rushed but too much of Bollywood style. Honestly, Preeti could have handled it in a better manner. The way Arush reacted was funny and weird at the same time. The end was definitely a big disappointment.

 PLOT

Puja is the second daughter of a surgeon mother and a renowned businessman father. Her elder sister had set high benchmarks. She is an achiever and never miss out on any opportunity. Whereas Puja is the bang opposite, she let life flows by. She has got no plans or vision for the future, clubbed with zero ambition. Needless to say,  the whole family is pissed off by her attitude, apart from the house caretaker. One of the reasons for the bone of contention is the constant comparison between the two sisters.

The mother finally sends her to rural Kerala for an experience, where she meets Arush. As time passes by they both fell in love, but destiny has different plans. Puja was implicated in false drug charges and sent home.

The lovers not only have to fight to be together but also, Arush has to save his art career. This love story will take them through a roller coaster ride, where not only will they evolve, but also will figure out life.

VERDICT
  • This book is average reading and it can prove to be a good travel buddy.
  • The end definitely needs to be looked into.
  • Crisp English.
  • Readers can give it a miss.

That looks like an honest and to-the-point review. The plot does seem to be more like bollywood movie but where’s the fun in life without a pinch of drama! might give it a try as a leisurely read.

Preeti Shenoy is a well-known author. But this book seems to be not in the league of some of her earlier books. Though the plot sounds interesting, I guess it loses ground somewhere along the way. Thanks for the honest review.
