The word trekking sounds exciting and cool. I have met people who went on their first trekking experience, without proper preparation. And trust me, it was not the kind of adventure they were looking forward to. Like every other thing in life, trekking additionally requires a lot of planning. Don’t jump into it without preparation.
Trekking can be pretty exciting as well as exerting depending on the physical condition. But as per my personal experience, a daily 1-hour walk will help in increasing the stamina.
Understand the various kind of treks:
a) If you are a beginner, with low stamina levels, then opt for an easy trek. This is broadly for 3-4 hours a day. These treks are not too physically demanding. The two-fold benefits are on completion of the trek, one experiences a sense of achievement and gets experience for the next level.
b) My personal preference is the moderate trek. They involve 4-7 hours. One needs to push, self out of the comfort zone, as they are a bit demanding. It does not involve traditional climbing, but definitely a significant amount of uphill walking. I believe with constant preparation, and discipline one can go for the moderate trek. If you do not want to hit the gym, no worries but then in such a case, stop taking the lift and opt to climb 100 steps daily. Cycling remains another excellent option to increase stamina.
c) Finally, come tough treks, this involves much preparation as you will be trekking in high altitude for 10-15 days. You need to be physically fit with no chronic ailments as heart problems, blood pressure, bones pertinent issue, asthma, etc. But it is worth a lifetime adventure.
We will discuss the different seasons recommended for trekking. Broadly people recommend not to trek during monsoons. But this is my favorite season for undertaking a trek, mountains or hills looks beautiful, due to the greenery, and it seems as if nature has cleaned everything. Though it is worth trying while undertaking monsoon treks, one needs to be extra cautious.
According to me a few of the significant things to be kept in mind and followed during the trek are:
a) Proper Backpack- There are multiple backpacks available, don’t go for a huge backpack as it will be difficult to carry them uphill. Also, the backpacks must be water-resistant, we have to protect the things from rain. Make a list of things that will be needed and then choose the capacity of the backpack accordingly. Try out American Tourister, Wildcraft, they provide amazing backpack options, which are pretty sturdy and colorful too.
b) Shoes- Hiking shoes are the most important part of the trek, a pair of wrong shoes can harm the ankles. And can leave you with blisters, bone spurs, skin ruptures, rashes, etc. Know your size and try to buy one size bigger than what you generally wear.
With the right amount of padding and protection, you need the adjustable pressure while you trek for longer treks. For that, I found Lock Laces (Hyperlink: locklaces.in), No-tie elastic lacing system, which adds compression and reduces pressure points. This increases circulation and makes your feet feel better throughout the day. The elastic laces will stretch when you put your foot in the shoe (so you won’t damage the heel) and the lock will keep your laces at the perfect tension.
Another thing that bothers me a lot, is the untied shoelaces. Many times they get loose and open up, increasing the risk of accidents. Lock Laces also solved it as it turned my pair of shoes into slip on’s giving the extra grip with style.
You can choose from a variety of range of colors and styles from Amazon.in (hyperlink: amazon.in/locklaces) and locklaces.in.
d) Water Bottle and Dry Snacks- Most of the people underestimate the value of drinking water during the trek, don’t get carried away with the nice weather. Trekking is an exercise and frequently keeping the body hydrated is highly Chlorine Dioxide Tablets easily purify water or carry water bottles with a filter. I prefer ultraviolet water purifiers, they eliminate the bacteria in 2 minutes, though I have to keep extra batteries handy.
Also, carry dry fruits, chocolates, peanuts other dry snacks for munching.
e) Clothing- Carry an extra layer of clothes and socks. Use nylon or spandex clothes they get dry easily. Do carry good windcheater and raincoat to prevent yourself from getting drenched. Wear loose comfortable clothes rather than super tight ones.
Point of concern:
1) Leeches- You might encounter leeches, cover your body completely during treks. In case you get bitten by a leech, apply salt and turmeric, they will wither off on their own.
2) Respect the environment- I believe this is the crucial point, be a responsible eco traveler. Carry a spare plastic or small cloth bag, in which you can dispose of the garbage. Avoid carrying plastic bottles, already mother earth is drowning under the sea of plastic, let’s not add to the existing chaos. Please go for stainless steel bottles, they are excellent for your health and for the environment both.
Trekking is a thrilling and life-changing experience. I have met people addicted to it, and every weekend goes for short treks. But nothing can beat the experience of monsoon trekking, do pack your bags and head out on an adventure journey.
Woww these are such great trekking points with all the details as one requires. Amazingly written
Trekking is a thrilling and satisfying activity. But like all other activities. one needs to prepare. And greater the degree of difficulty more the preparation and practice required. Treks can get really challenging because of rains and one needs to exercise caution.
I fully agree, monsoon treks needs a lot of preparation and readiness.

Very informative article for all trekking lovers especially those who are novice. I personally believe, without precautions and preparation trekking can be so dangerous and leading towards death also. Nice post
Yes, people go on treks believing it is quite filmy, but without proper preparation, any casualty may happen.
We haven’t really done a lot of treks even though Bangalore has some really adventurous trails closeby. Maybe its time we tried with an easy one!
Vidur, try Nandi Hills it is easy and will give you the necessary motivation to continue. You guys have amazing treks around Bangalore.
These tips are amazing. Right from stamina levels to the weight of the bag and even being an eco traveler. Too good.
Thanks for the feedback.
Trekking is indeed hard work, but the rewards are a lifetime of memories and a chance to get to know a world which so few people are interested in doing. Have to agree that you have to do some preparations. Thanks for sharing these important tips.
Sundeep thanks for the feedback. I hope once you go for trekking, these point helps you a lot.
I LOVE trekking and just completed a winter trek in January before the lockdown. I am eagerly waiting to go on a monsoon trek as soon as the lockdown opens. Fantastic information in your post here. It will surely help new trekkers to join the funtastic tribe!
Hey Mayura, thanks a tonne for your kind words. Yes, the monsoon treks are amazing and one should definitely try them out.
This was a great post for anyone who’s just beginning with trekking! Not just monsoons, these tips come handy during any season. I’m sure a lot of people will benefit from this!
Never been on a trekking expedition. Your post is inspiring enough.. Someday after this lockdown is over I might think of thinking to go for a trek 😀
Really good tips and these things become more important especially during monsoons. I love hiking but I do not prefer hikes especially in winters or monsoons. But I know some of the trails are stunning during monsoons. Having a good backpack can solve so many problems.
I am sure you can find an interesting trek in Australia. They also have good hikers group.
It becomes very risky to trek in monsoon. I was in Dehradun and I remember how difficult it was to even walk on trail. So slipper, muddy and the thick plantation.
I usually carry some balm which helps me to relieve from pain of any muscle ache and also helps in any insect bite.
It is my dream to do a trek like this one day! My mom did a few when she was younger so I would love to follow in her footsteps 🙂
Some great tips here and not just during monsoons. I really enjoy hiking and I often go and explore the mountains for an entire day, however, I have never done a full backpack trekking that involves sleeping in tents. The good hiking shoes and the raincoat I find as some of the most important elements.
This is something I’m more inclined to do now (thanks, Covid!) because it’s a great way to explore some local areas and stay away from people haha. I’d love to do something like this in Nepal one day! These are great tips!
Thanks, Sarah incidentally COVID made me realize trekking is one thing that needs to be incorporated in the bucket list. Nepal is a good option, I would suggest trying India first, they have amazing treks.
I guess I consider myself a moderate “trekker”. I would love to try a longer one. I completely agree with you and I tell everybody new to trekking that they have to have a really good pair of hiking boots. I also find that socks for hiking help as well as they have extra padding and also help to cut down on the blisters.
Yes Kelly socks plays an important role, sadly they are the most ignored item. I will look for socks with extra padding, as presently I had none. Thanks for highlighting the same.
You are right about preparing adequately for trekking and hiking.
When I went for my first trekking, I wasn’t prepared, I ended up having severe aches days after. I will keep these tips handy for my next trekking experience.
Ditto happened to me. I had body ache and cramp in my legs. From that experience, I realized the importance of future preparation where trekking is concerned.
Trekking is something that I really need to work on more and your post make me want to get into it asap. Thanks for that! 🙂
Yes Florin, do go for a trek, it is a lifetime experience.
An excellent post on how to prepare for trekking. It’s true sometimes we forget the right trekking shoes or we don’t think about leeches!! My first trekking experience was up Mt Tahan in Malaysia and although I took all precautions to be fully covered, leeches found their way to my toes! We had salt but not turmeric. Thank you so much for sharing this post. Its great read for first timers especially
Hey Georgina, thanks for your amazing words. Leeches become a major problem when we travel up, also at times up in the Himalayas there are few plants, which are equally poisonous. And at times they cause rashes. One needs to be fully prepared, to meet such situations.
I have trekked thru the Himalayas so many times during monsoon that I can immediately see how good some of your tips are!
Thanks Kanupriyaa for your kind words.
This is such great advice! It’s definitely important to he prepared. When I hiked Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, I didn’t plan like I should have. Learned an important lesson and will definitely keep these tips in mind in the future!
Trekking is such a fun activity, particularly if it’s a group trek adds to the adventure. The latest one I did was in Tung fort, Pune. All your tips are so useful and handy! Yet to go for a monsoon trek though..
