5 unique reasons for traveling

I read somewhere to know ourselves fully, we should lose ourselves first. I am a born gallivanter, I often imagine myself with a backpack full of necessary items, out on roads to explore the world. And, in order to do this, the best way is to travel. There is a lot of Gyan floating around the group or solo traveling like it relieves stress, gets you away from regular life, creates memories, provides unlimited adventure, etc. I agree with most of the mentioned points, but according to me, there are few more important aspects which at times we miss.

a)Travel open gates- When we travel we not only gain experience as to how the people live in different parts of our country or world? But, also we get access to ideas which we were unaware of. Traveling to distant shores might give a kick to the entrepreneur hiding inside you, and you stumble across some great products to be exported or imported. Or a new business idea to be implemented. You might also land up in place or country where you want to spend the rest of your life. You might get an idea of relocation to foreign lands.

b)Connecting the dots- If you are a serious traveler, who likes to do research before visiting a place, then not only it will help you in learning and understanding a new place historical significance but, will help you in connecting the dots and relating them to the present. That’s why it is important to dig into the history of a place before booking your tickets, this will help you in making conscious choices. But if you are traveling only for leisure, shopping, or for the Instagram photo then it is a different thing. During my Sri Lankan travel, I was able to understand the two countries deeply interlinked past.

c)Travel a form of exercise- This is something in which I firmly believe, travel always helps me in getting the much-needed dose of exercise. When I am traveling I am mostly out exploring, which involves a lot of walking around. And, if I decide to go for hiking and trekking then I do a lot of physical preparation back home, this helps me in having a purpose and also remaining fit in the busy schedule. I believe a lot of adventure-seeking travelers will be in sync with this point of view.

d) Say hello to yourself- I am a great fan of the solo traveling, without anyone around, and not dealing with the other person’s moods or preferences, makes one feel free from inside. While traveling solo I learned many new things about myself, certain aspects of my personality which I was unaware of. It is like saying hello to your new self. It also provides one the much needed time to ruminate where life is heading to in general.

e)Travel break myths- We often form an opinion about a country and nationality, from books, movies, or after hearing other’s experiences. When we travel, we get to see and experience things firsthand and that is the time we realize, many things told to us were wrong. During my travels, I came across a few Europeans who were quiet communicative, loved to mingle with the local population, and were eager to learn the new culture.

Don’t wait and think much, pack your bags, and hop on a never-ending adventure that traveling brings.

Cannot agree enough with all of this. I learn more about myself every time we go, and it’s great to experience a place first hand and dispel any biases or myths…great post!

I completely agree with all of your points. It’s interesting that you mention that travel opens the doors to new opportunities. This is exactly what happened to my brother-in-law. He lives in east coast Canada where there is a lot of seafood. He visited Spain (and ultimately moved there for several years) and saw a need for seafood to be imported to Spain. That is now his business. Exporting seafood to various parts of the world.

    1. gypsy says

Kelly this is so nice to know. I believe your brother in law is a very observant person. This is the biggest benefit of traveling, explore, and find new career opportunities.

  4. Polly says

You are right about every single point. I love how I have the freedom to do more exercise when I’m on holiday. Travel has also kick-started my entrepreneurship career as I now have my travel company where I take families on epic experiences.

Wow, I was unaware that traveling helped you in becoming an entrepreneur. You are few lucky ones, who made your passion your livelihood.

  6. Aradhana says

This is so true and from the heart! I strongly believe that travel makes us richer, more knowledgeable & most importantly accepting and adaptable. Being from an army background, travelling, even to some of the most remote places has played a role in shaping my personality.

    1. gypsy says

Aradhana you have well pointed out. I have seen army kids well-traveled, knowledgable, and has a different perspective on a few things. Probably early age traveling helped them a lot.

Love this post! I completely agree. I love how much my perception has changed of other countries – some of the most “dangerous” parts of the world house the nicest humans. Thanks for sharing! <3

I have been traveling solo for years and I identify with so many of your reasons. Traveling is amazing and everyone should become a traveler and experience the independence!

  12. Medha Verma says

I completely agree with all reasons, especially about breaking myths and stereotypes. Also, travel is a form of exercise for me too because when I travel, I am extremely active and I love walking around, there are times I manage to walk 20-22 kms in a day! I eat a lot too but I still come back with a toned tummy and legs haha. Also, solo travel is very liberating!

    1. gypsy says

Ask me I am a great fan of solo traveling, without catering to anyone’s whims and fancies. ANd one learns a lot about self.

  13. Linda (LD Holland) says

I have to agree that travelling teaches us so much about other areas of the world. We too love to research a spot before we visit. And learn so much as we explore. We are definitely far more active when we are travelling. This has become super apparent now being stuck at home. We have had surprises on our travels – both good and bad. But I think that is a lesson all on its own – no spot is every 100% of whatever a stereotype might say. Good point in this blog post.

    1. gypsy says

This is such a wonderful and honest comment. No place is 100% as mentioned in the stereotypes. One needs to travel and explore to understand the differences.

  14. Eric Gamble says

Kind of a combination of #2 Connecting the Dots and #4 Saying Hello to yourself that I think you could add is maybe #6) Connecting the Dots to Yourself! I think one of the most unique and perhaps even the most fun reasons to travel is to go somewhere that your ancestors visited or even lived. That way when you visit, you can learn about why they may have lived there, why they may have left, and what cultural traits from that area were passed down all the way to you!

    1. gypsy says

Eric thanks for the wonderful suggestion. I agree with your point, when we visit distant lands and forgotten civilizations, we tend to know how life was at some point in time. As you very well pointed out knowing your ancestors.

  15. Martha says

Great points! There is so much to be learned through traveling. I love traveling with my young kids because I feel that it opens up their eyes to new ideas and new ways of doing things. Our world can become so much broader and richer through travel.

    1. gypsy says

Martha only few people can understand the importance of traveling. When we travel with young kids, we introduce them to a new world and make them more tolerant towards other cultures.
