As we know that winters have started, it may not always be possible to go to the park in the cold. I’m sure we can’t study all the time and our parents won’t let us watch TV all the time during the winter break. We can utilize this time by reading books.

THE AMAR CHITRA KATHAS are biographies of some great people of the world. My mom tells me they are really very old and she also used to read them when she was a child. They can be ordered online or bought from some popular bookstores. I have read close to 30 titles from the Amar Chitra Katha series. Five of my favorite ACKs are :

1.BHAGAT SINGH – Bhagat Singh, the freedom who awakened India and brought the British rule to knees. This is a really wonderful story and what amazed me was that Bhagat Singh was only 23 when he was hanged by the British.

2.DASHA AVATAR- This story is about the ten incarnations Of Lord Vishnu: Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha and the Kalki avatars. I find this book very interesting. It also tells the story of how life began on Earth.

3.DIVINE BEINGS – Mythological tales are always so interesting. And so are stories of animals. Combine the two and you get the most interesting story of fantasy creatures that are important to Indian mythology. These sacred beings of Indian mythology are endowed with strength, courage, and beauty like – Jatayu, Nandi, Airavata, Gandaberunda, Shyama and Sambala.

4.JAHANGIR – I first learned about the Mughal rulers when my parents took me to see Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri. Fatehpur Sikri was built by Akbar and Taj Mahal by Shah Jahan. Jahangir was the father of Akbar and the grandfather of Shah Jahan. I really like this story that is so full of adventure.

5.SHAH JAHAN – This is a difficult choice. I have read the ACK about Akbar also. But I liked Shah Jahan more because I have read a chapter of Akbar already in my social studies book in school.

I hope you pick up these books and will read them during your winter break. Happy New Year to you!
