Ok, so if you are getting some naughty ideas after seeing the above photo, please do throw them out. This is a massage room, for Kalari Massage. Oh yes, this massage will leave you thoroughly rejuvenated and will pamper your senses.

So guys, if you are a fan of traditional Indian Ayurveda massages, then head to neoVeda Spa located in The Metropolitan Hotel and Spa. I have experienced Panchkarma, Shirodhara, Udvartana, Potli massage and few other Ayurveda massages. When I heard about Kalari massage, I was intrigued and thought of exploring it further. My initial research around Kalari massage revealed, apart from hands, feet are also used during the course of massage.

Kalari massage originated from Northern Kerala, Kalari was basically an ancient martial art form of Kerela. This massage closely follows the principle of “Marmas”. Herb-infused Ayurvedic oils are used during the massage, which is largely performed by the therapist using hand and feet, applying appropriate pressure to specific vital points or parts of the body.

I was asked to sit in the sauna for sometime before heading towards the therapy room. This ensures, that the pores are open and body is more receptive to receive oil. The therapist made me comfortable by stretching my limbs. She applied lukewarm oil on the lower part of the body. With the aid of the rope, she started gently applying feet pressure on the body. Once she was done with feet, she used her hands to spread the oil evenly across limbs. Slowly this was applied to the whole body. Before the message, I had severe pain in shoulders. The therapy opened up my knots, relaxed me and put me in deep slumber. By the time I got up, I was utterly fresh and became a huge fan of this massage.

The oil used in neoVeda Spa’s, Kalari Massage is Dhanwadharam oil. It is an Ayurvedic oil used for strengthening the muscles and nervous system. The massage oil is an amalgamation of the best quality extract of herbs for the wellbeing of the mind and soul. It helps in curing diseases like facial paralysis, muscular weakness, muscular pain, backache, rheumatic diseases, spondylitis, and few others. The massage acts on the nerves, muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and connective tissues. It relieves pain, numbness, and swelling thus providing strength to the muscles and joints. The stimulation of the nerves results in the removal of toxins, removal of mental tension, stress and strain from the muscles, endurance to fatigue and hence perfect health. It also stimulates or generates the energy resources and helps the flow of vital energy in the individual. It removes blockages from the “marma” points giving physical and psychological relaxation and strength.

Kalari Massage has an interesting origin, basically, it was a scientific system to strengthen a warrior physically and mentally. With the help of herbal an Ayurveda oils, these nerve points were stimulated.

The kind of stressful life we live, Kalari massage is apt. A lot depends on the masseur, before going for this massage, always look for an authentic center which provides an authentic experience.

I opted for  Vedic Journey at neoVeda Spa. The journey contained a Kalari massage and Honey –Cucumber facial. The skin of the face and body was cleansed, invigorated, restored and nourished, tired muscles were eased and energized. At the end of therapy, I was refreshed and energized to take the world head-on.
